PRACTICAL TRAINING
During practical training at a company, which is mandatory at all Higher Vocational Colleges and accounts for 800 hours or 40% of the study program, students are introduced to work under the close supervision of a mentor. It is an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen profession. The knowledge acquired at school can be applied in practice, and students learn how to use it to solve problems and achieve goals. Practical training also helps students develop new skills necessary for success in the labor market.
Benefits of practical training in companies for students:
-
Gaining hands-on experience in their chosen profession
-
Learning to apply the knowledge acquired at school in a real-world environment
-
Using knowledge to solve problems and achieve goals
-
Developing new skills needed for success in the labor market
-
Increasing employability after graduation
-
Boosting motivation and satisfaction with their studies
-
Meeting new people and experiencing different cultures
-
Gaining confidence and independence
-
Developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills
-
Acquiring teamwork abilities
-
Enhancing communication skills
Practical training in companies is a valuable experience that helps students develop the skills and knowledge needed for success in their profession and personal life.
For more information, contact the practical training coordinator at your Higher Vocational College.

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
In Slovenia, the education of children and youth with special needs is systematically well-regulated, researched, and supported at the primary and secondary levels. However, at the tertiary level, this area is not as comprehensively supported or regulated. The Higher Vocational Education Act does not specify a legal basis for granting students special rights related to adaptations in the delivery of education. The recognition of such rights falls within the responsibility of higher vocational schools.
In the draft Rules on Adapting Studies for Students with Special Needs, the framework for working with students with special needs is presented, including procedures for obtaining special status, study adaptations, monitoring and support, students’ rights and obligations, and record-keeping and documentation.
The number of students with special needs participating in higher vocational education has increased in recent years. These students require various adaptations and support in the study process and learning environment because, due to long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments, they face obstacles that prevent or hinder their full and effective participation in the study process, unlike other students.
To achieve academic success and develop their potential, students with special needs usually require additional effort and work. Therefore, adapting the study process and learning environment to the needs of students with special needs is of central importance, as is providing assistance when a student requires support from another person to carry out certain tasks within the study process. With appropriate adaptations, students with special needs can more easily integrate into the study process and achieve their intended learning outcomes.
STUDY MATERIALS
Within the Impletum project, authors from various higher vocational schools have prepared high-quality and useful study materials for both lecturers and students. We invite you to explore them and use them to excel in your exams.
HEALTH INSURANCE
SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships for students vary in purpose, eligibility criteria, amount, obligations, and other conditions. Most scholarships are awarded by the state, but students can also receive corporate scholarships awarded by various companies or scholarships from their municipality.
State Scholarship
The state scholarship is intended for students from socially disadvantaged families who meet the general conditions specified in Articles 11, 12, and 13 of the Scholarship Act (ZŠtip-1). It is awarded to those whose average monthly income per family member in the previous year, before submitting the application, does not exceed €1,218.08. The state scholarship can be combined with a corporate scholarship, a scholarship for shortage professions, and some others such as Ad Futura.
Applications for the state scholarship are available on the eUprava portal HERE (usually in September if you wish to receive the scholarship for the entire academic year). Applications can also be submitted at any time during the year, as the scholarship is granted from the first day of the month following submission. The amount of the basic state scholarship depends on the average monthly income per family member. In addition to the basic scholarship, various supplements may be awarded, such as for academic achievement, housing, or for students with special needs.
Applications to extend the state scholarship in higher years for the next academic year are required only for students applying for the first time or for those whose application was previously rejected. The state scholarship can be suspended for one to three academic years (depending on the reason) and no more than one uninterrupted year at a given education level. Exceptions include suspension due to census or justified reasons. If a scholarship holder does not successfully complete the year, the scholarship must be returned. It must also be returned if the student does not graduate by 30 September of the calendar year following the final year.
Zois Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for gifted and above-average students. It can be awarded to those who meet the general conditions in Articles 11–13 of ZŠtip-1, have achieved an exceptional accomplishment, and demonstrate satisfactory academic success. Satisfactory success is defined as a grade point average of 8.5 or being among the top 5% of students. Candidates are selected based on the highest points for exceptional achievements until funds are exhausted. Zois and state scholarships cannot be received simultaneously, but housing or special needs supplements can be combined with a Zois scholarship.
Applications for the first award of a Zois scholarship must be submitted according to the public call published by the Public Scholarship, Development, Disability, and Maintenance Fund of the Republic of Slovenia (hereinafter: the Fund) on their website HERE, where the application form is also available.
To continue receiving the Zois scholarship in higher years, all conditions must be met (enrollment in the higher year + general conditions) and at least one exceptional accomplishment or a grade point average of at least 8.5 must be achieved. Applications for continuation must be submitted before the academic year begins, by 30 September. Otherwise, the scholarship will be suspended or will take effect from the first day of the next month of the current academic year.
State and Zois Scholarships
NEW FOR 2024/25: According to the amendment to the Scholarship Act adopted by the National Assembly on 24 November 2023, from the 2024/2025 academic year it will be possible to receive both the state and Zois scholarships simultaneously.
Corporate Scholarships
These are awarded by employers based on planned staffing needs, who also determine the scholarship amount and special conditions. A consolidated list of available corporate scholarships is published by the Public Fund based on the needs reported by employers. Available scholarships can be found:
-
on the Fund’s website, under the “Exchange” tab,
-
on employers’ websites, newsletters, or other media (these must also be reported to the Fund),
-
on the websites of regional development agencies (RRA), which publish collected employer needs for scholarship recipients;
-
it is recommended to contact employers directly for information.
Other Scholarships
Scholarships are also offered by foundations, municipalities, and other organizations. Information is usually published on the scholarship provider’s website, in media, or on the Public Fund’s website.
Ad Futura Scholarships – intended to promote international mobility of students and researchers from Slovenia abroad and from abroad to Slovenia. Most calls are published in December on the Fund’s website HERE.
Scholarships for Slovenians abroad – intended for members of the indigenous Slovenian community in neighboring countries and descendants of Slovenian emigrants, to promote connections between young people abroad and their homeland. More information HERE.
SUBSIDIZED HOUSING
Students are eligible for housing subsidies if they meet the conditions and criteria for subsidized accommodation and conclude a housing contract with a student or youth dormitory or with a private landlord.
Public Call for Housing
Each year, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation publishes a public call for the acceptance and renewal of student accommodation for higher vocational and higher education students in student dormitories and with private landlords. Candidates submit their application for acceptance or renewal of accommodation to the desired student dormitory, youth dormitory, private student dormitory, or private landlord through an electronic application.
The public call for the new academic year is published by 1 June. In the published call, candidates can check:
-
application deadlines,

the number of available beds in each higher education center,
-
whether they meet the eligibility criteria for accommodation,
-
how to apply.
Application for Accommodation
Students who meet the following general conditions can submit an application for accommodation:
